Like many startups, the idea that led to Spangle came to me while I was in college. I spent one brutally hot summer on an extension ladder painting houses and plotting my strategy to NEVER paint houses again. No offense to the painting community, but I needed something more exciting and meaningful. I knew I wanted to create SOMETHINGso I naively decided I would just build a company.

Wide-eyed and inspired, I brainstormed for days making lists, thinking about problems people had while being pragmatic about my selection criteria - what had big potential and was actually doable? It was at this point that I crossed Teleportation Device off the list…at least for now.

The first idea I landed on - a dating app for college students that notified a user when the person they liked, liked them back (Tinder, anyone?) - seemed to be the most promising. I didn’t have the resources to make an app, so it became a website instead and “launched” to a couple hundred Trinity College students before I shut it down after the site seemed to stir more small-college controversy than it was worth.
